Day 189: KDrama - Crash Landing On You

A freak tornado, a paragliding misadventure, and a love that crosses the divide between North and South.

Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) is a millionaire K-beauty South Korean entrepreneur and also a pro-am paraglider with her own lifestyle brand. She has just been nominated as heir to her father’s business empire, surpassing two numbskull brothers who are incapable running the business. Testing out some athleisure wear while paragliding, Se-ri gets sucked into a freak tornado and dumped into the demilitarised zone between South and North Korea. There, she’s discovered by an extremely dashing North Korean soldier (Captain Ri Jeong-hyuk, played by Hyun Bin) who tries to help her return south, but she runs in the wrong way and ends up in hiding. Over time, they fall in love, despite the divide and dispute between their respective countries.

It is like a twist on the age-old Romeo and Juliet trope, Crash Landing On You tells the story of two star-crossed lovers, how they met and after twist and turns, they come together finally. Unfortunately, the supporting female and male couple didn't make it in the end. Overall, the emphasis is on a shared humanity, a shared Koreanness, despite the divide. And that can be genuinely touching.

Reflection: What I like most about this KDrama is the beautiful scenery of Switzerland and Mongolia. It is my first time get to know how North and South Koreans live their lives. I also like the 5 army boys, they are so funny and loyal. Finally, I am glad to see how female lead Se-ri resolve the conflict with her step mother. Generally, It is worth to watch to see this 16 episode of korean drama. Oh Yah, Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin came together in Jan 2021 after few years of acting together. They look sweet together. Hopefully, their relationship in reality can be lasting as well.
Some people became better as they aged. This 2005 MBC drama turned Hyun Bin from a rookie actor to a star. “My Lovely Kim Sam Soon” centered around the life of a bachelorette in her 30s (played by Kim Sun Ah). Hyun Bin moved audiences to laughter and tears with his portrayal of Hyun Jin Hun, who was working through his past trauma.

Next, I am going to watch Hyun Bin's "Memories of the Alhambra". It is about Augmented Reality gaming.
