I am good enough
When I ask him a deeper question,"Why do you keep changing your mind?" He mentioned that during his course of study at NAFA, his teacher constantly tell him that his artwork is not good enough. He adopt this mindset of his work is not good enough. Years after years, after 20+ years later, even though he is 40+ years old now. He has brought over his past negative experience till now. Whenever a designer does his work, he will think it is not good enough. He didn't dare to pursue his dream of being a videographer. He didn't realise how big impact his teacher has given to him.
How I helped him is to have this awareness that whatever his teacher has mentioned, is already over. Let it go... He is good enough and people around him is good enough. I also just realised that how strong and how deep the impact was given from the teacher. Whatever the teacher has said to his students, be it good or bad, it will impact his students. Choose our words wisely.

The experience is good. I managed do some sketches and to paint an acrylic painting in 4 hours.

Fulfilling Volunteer Teaching
I had a few realisations, in the eyes of parents, their children is perfect. They can overlook their children flaws and give them unconditional love to their children. For example, one student forgot to wear PE Tshirt for the ceremony and her father brings her clothings to the school.
The focus of teaching is to understand the needs of the students and provide the dharma accordingly so that the children will benefit in a long run.
The bonding of the main teacher and assistant teacher needs to be there to experience the utmost learning for the students.
As I was worried that the playful children will screw up the performance. However, they are well behaved during the performance surprisingly. In fact, I am touched by their behaviour. There's no bad children, only teachers who didn't have the skills to guide the children yet.
The essence of gardener of life《生命园丁》is to plant good seeds into the children mind so that they will have positive outlook of life.

New insights about enlightenment
He told me his own learning that enlightenment is not about the end-point is enlightenment. To him, every realisation is enlightenment to make us wiser. After digesting with what he said, I realise that every little steps or new insights help us to be wiser on the path of enlightenment. It is a process. To break-free from our bad habits and make us a better person is enlightening. How much have we let go of our own attachments is enlightenment.
For example, when we are lazy, we must have the awareness and choose to be diligent, break-free from our own laziness, find alternatives ways to make us more motivated to complete our tasks. This not only strengthen our diligence quality and it cultivates our discipline and focus.
We have been deluded in the past, it is important to make ourselves in this time round, learnt the lessons and be wiser. Most often it is easier said than done. However, I remembered venerable chuan guan said that if we can remove at least 1 bad habit in this lifetime, we are 1 step better than yesterday, it is worth rejoicing.
In the past, I was too attached to romance, thinking how the ideal romance should be. Yes, the word "should be" is my own expectations, not the reality. Hence, it caused unnecessary suffering to myself and the other person unknowingly. In the romance relationship, there is bound to have love-separation suffering. Because one day, one person will leave another person, even they are fortunate enough to live to the ripe old age.
A friend of mine told his wife that he doesn't want to have any promises that they will be together in the next life as he realised the truth that attachment is the root cause of suffering. I think it is wise of him to say that, no matter how we wanted to be enlightened, as long as there is attachment, it will be hard to break-free from cycle of life and death.
For this life and future lives, I hope that I will have less and less attachments. I also realised that detachment is not about giving all away, it is about appreciate and cherish the things and people around us and not to cling on to them when they are not around.

Observing Mind
My mind just trick me into believing that something bad is about to happen, which is totally untrue. It could be due to past bad experience to trigger the "emergency" alert. It can be dangerous as my mind can be in deluded mode, unable to see things clearly as they are. That is why it is important to keep my mind in a grounded and calm state of mind.
Another story which I want to share is my friend's mother in law who is at her last stage of cancer. Doctor said that she only had 3 months to live. She started to have craving for food, although she can't eat at all. Shifu says that if her wish, just try to fulfill her as much as possible. Let her mind be at the state of calmness.
I start to think if one's desire and craving are so strong, one can likely fall into attachments and not be able to leave peacefully. It can affect our quality of rebirth. It is so important to train and keep our mind positive. It never comes to me that departing this world can be so challenging. However, all the more we should do our best to be reborn at Amitaba Buddha's Pureland to learn from him and progress from there.
Meanwhile, just do our best to keep our mind pure, calm and peaceful to our best ability.

The day has ended...
AT THE END OF THE DAY
At the end of the day,
after all the work is done;
At the end of the day,
as my heart is filled with gratitude;
After all the trials,
and after all the uncertainties;
After all the learning,
to make it through the day;
I thank for peace and joy,
for the people I met and connected with;
I thank for the work that I have done,
for little accomplishments I did today;
For there is no blessing,
such as this I found so true:
It’s such a pleasure just walking home
at the end of the day with a grateful heart!

Winning in life
He mentioned that there is one student who changed his life. This student was expelled by him due to his poor results and his misbehavior. Many years later, he saw this student delivery goods at the carpark and he shared that,"No school wants me because of my poor results and misbehavior. I had no choice but to come out to work." He paused,"Principal, Am I such a bad student?"
This question ponders the principal and he reflects on his own actions, his value is to educate the students well but yet he chose to give up this student, due to the education system who only keeps the best students. Hence, he quit his job and specially trained the low income students and give them free education. He strongly believes that only through education, it could improve the quality of life.
Unfortunately, the tuition centre couldn't sustain and the landlord wants to increase 30% of the loan fee. Pressure given from his wife as she can't understand why his students are always put in his first place. She raised a divorce as she can't agree with him anymore as he has neglected her and his daughter, not only that he wanted to sell away his house, just to keep the tuition centre.
The next scene is teacher's daughter went missing because her friends laughs at her and found by the expelled student. The wife thanked the student for helping to find back her daughter. The student realized that the daughter is actually the principal's daughter and told the wife that the principal was his beneficiary because despite the principal had to work a couple of jobs, he still spend nights with him to give him free tuition, which pull him through into university. He was very grateful to the principal. The wife realized that how great her husband is and she and they also realised he is a great man.
Twists and turns, the principal's sister managed to find a china investor who is willing to invest in the tuition centre to sustain the centre. All end well eventually.
Reflection:
This is a good story to me. As I am a volunteer teacher, at times I need to handle misbehave child, but the question is should I outcast the student so that he will not distract other students? If I have done so, am I holding back his rights in learning and not be able to learn the proper values like other students? How can I teach better so that the students, including the misbehave child, will enjoy and like my class? These are the answers I need to find myself.
Fortunately, for this principal, he is willing to make up to the student. If not, his action would have ruins a person's life.
What every we do, there is a karma reaction. It can be good or bad consequences. Do no harm to people with words or actions, especially children.
Words can be a double edge sword, to condemn or to inspire. Because what are we say or do to them, they will take it to heart and it may takes years or a lifetime to remove/heal these words and actions, where the impacts have already done to the child.

Happy Birthday to myself
There is my lovely po piah birthday "cake", first time invention by me hehe :D. Though the wordings are not clearly seen, but it is still my own creations :) Thanks for the beautiful decor and yummy food. It is hilarious whenever I am with this group of friends. I think it is because they are simple at heart and always feel comfortable with them.
Today, I met Pey yng and her son for lunch. She is a vegetarian now and she told me she does it for her family. I didn't feel much joy within her so I share my experience with her at 8 precepts retreat. She starts to feel a bit happier. Then she said she wants to go to the famous guan yin temple to pray. I went with her and it has been a long time since I stepped in that temple. I give thanks to the gods and bodhisattvas who may have helped me in the past. I told them that I have taken refuge with 3 Triple Gems: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. I will continue to practice the Buddhist way and tell them that I am happier since I taken the 3 Triple Gems Refuge.
Before I end my day, I shared Venerable Master Hsing Yun's 5 Harmony with Pey Yng. The 5 harmony is:
1) Be Happy Within Ourselves
2) Be Harmony and Peace within Family
3) Be Respectful with People
4) Be Harmony with Society
5) World Peace
I am still practicing each day now I have harmony within myself lol :D Gambatte! Happy Birthday to myself, working towards a better self :)

8 Precepts Retreat
I find it meaningful as this retreat is relaxing and I enjoy Venerables' talks. We did chanting, sitting mediation and walking mediation. It is all about mindfulness in eating, talking, sitting and walking. Feeling grateful that a number of helpers attended to our needs, they gave us blankets as the weather was raining in the morning, as the sun came out, they lower the temp. Our body just changes to adapt the weather.
Some of the key things that Venerables have mentioned:
1) Walking, standing, sitting and lying down are the basic actions as a human being.
2) Living in the present = Mindfulness
Be mindful about little things in life, it could means a lot.
Red Carpet Analogy
Self-Manage our own emotions, if we are not in control, others will control us.
6)Criticism and Compliments are just sounds, be unaffected by these sounds and circumstances.
7) When someone is angry, when we are able to see he is suffering, hence our bodhicitta arises. Listen with empathy and help within our own means. Don't be affected by his circumstances.
Bodhisattvas have completed 6 parimitas perfections. It is a long journey to cultivate bodhisattvas path. Let me master the 5 precepts first. 3 levels of learnings.
What I like most in this retreat is walking mediation, keeping myself mindful as I walk. I like one of 普贤菩萨 chant, mentioning the time is short, every moment is precious. I made 3 vows today, to be more caring towards my parents, to be more diligent in my practice and bless people to be well and happy.
I will take one step at a time. These are very good reminders for me as I can be really forgetful at times!

Repentance
Wen Fang shares with me her own experience that she has fear in driving. Even the fortune teller tells her not to drive. Through her own meditation, she saw that in her past life, she was a reckless driver which caused her own death. Now, every time she drives, she is more mindful and repents.
I personally think that she is courageous. Facing her own problem, instead of avoiding it, she finds ways to resolve it and rebuilt her own confidence in driving.
As for myself, I repent for all the wrong deeds that I have done in this lifetime and my past lives due to greed, hatred and ignorance, I vow to cease all evil deeds and be a good person from this lifetime.

Short stories of Finance
This particular story draws my attention.
I glad that I choose my own inner peace than to continue to struggle over my lost of wealth. I have not lost the valuable inner peace and courage within me, instead I gained clarity.
The most absurd "solution" which a friend gives is to go to the FBI to handle the situation, since that guy is from UK. I know he is trying to help. But deep in my heart,"You think we are shooting drama, is it? All I want is to put my mind back to peaceful state."
This is what I replied to him: "It's alright. If this is a fraud case, he will be caught. If his case is genuine, he will be fine one day. There's no reason for malaysian police to keep him as he already serve his notice.
As for my money, it will come back to me in another form, so I already let go this incident.
Between money and peace, I choose peace of mind. Thanks for your kind offer, I don't need it anymore."
I thought through carefully what I needed to do for me to move on in these 2 days. Instead of still harping on the lost money, which I can't do much about it, I redirect my focus and energy into my projects and people that I care about. I am thankful that the most people around gave me good advice and let me see the whole picture better.
You know what, I slept well after I decided to let go of the lost money. My existing and new clients come to ask me to help them with the design projects.

You are born to shine!
What I have breakthroughs are:
1) I am starting to break free from my usual way of thinking patterns.
2) I am more open and receptive towards new ideas and learning.
3) I can share my thoughts with other people with less nervousness.
4) I understand that I need to gather my key points and expand them on the spots.
5) I can use every Friday mornings as my training ground.
6) I breakdown my message into points so that I will be able to remember better.
7) I am more confident than before.
It is really powerful to do things that I am fearful about. When I actually do it, my courage and confidence grow tremendously! I very thankful about it. I remembered Darren Tay shared with me that his teacher told him that he is born to shine! I felt inspired too! Now I started to feel and experience that I am born to shine as well! I will continue to learn and expand myself. I am truly grateful to able to have so many good, valuable and experience friends around me. Thank you!

Stop being anxious and start being relax
1) Choose your friends wisely You are average of 5 people you spend most of the time with. Our environment shapes our thinking and behavior in quiet and powerful ways! There are friends who drains your energy and there are friends who have a holistic approach of living their life where they can uplift your energy. Spend more time with them and they not only help you to think positively, and you can learn to handle your challenges more effectively.
2) Set aside time each day to worry If you find the urge to worry uncontrollable, I recommend that you set a specific time each day to worry. E.g. you allocate 10 mins after dinner to worry so that you know that you have time to worry. It may sound strange technique but it is effective as it allows you to compartmentalise your worries. During these worry sessions, write down all fears and concerns that you have and brainstorm possible solutions. If you can't find any solutions, this is probably a worry that you shouldn't spend so much time on as there is nothing you can do about it.
3) Stop comparing Everyone is unique in our own ways. Comparing makes us feel inferior or ego about ourselves and other people. Learn to count our blessings and we are learning and growing.
4) Keep a gratitude journal Being grateful helps us to focus on the positive side. In fact there are research that shows grateful people tend to be happier people. Write down 1 thing that you are thankful for each day. A simple entry can be:
- I am thankful to have a stable career that enables me to provide for my family.
- I am thankful my family cares for me and I am able to spend quality time with them.
Worries are weeds that can run rampant and become a destructive force in our lives. I hope by applying 4 tips in this article, we are able to manage these weeds better so that we can focus time and energy on bring up healthy, happy and successful life.

How to get organised
How to Deep Clean and Organize Your Room
4 Useful Tips I will adopt are:
Organize your bedside table Take everything off and out of it. Organize the drawers and the top of it. Wipe down the bedside table and go through the items you cleared off of the bedside table. Put anything important you might need on the top of it like a glasses case, cell phone, etc. But try not to make it too cluttered.
Organize your desk Work is very important and you can work best in an organized area. Take everything off the desk and sort it. Keep only stuff important to work or school and find homes for everything else. Wipe down the desk and neatly organize the items on the desk. Also, wipe down your desk chair. You are more likely to work well if you feel comfortable, clean, and organized.
Organize your bookshelf Clear out the bookshelf and sort the items. Next, wipe down the shelves and give it a minute to dry. Next, organize books and keepsakes. Remember, you DO NOT want to create a junk shelf so DO NOT put things that are irrelevant to the other items on the bookshelf.
Organize the clothes in your closet a certain way. First, clear out the closet. Wash all your clothes. If clothing does not fit anymore, then donate it. Vacuum/mop/shampoo the floor and wipe down shelves, racks, and other parts of the closet. Next, hang up delicate items (note that knitted items should be folded in drawers to prevent stretching of the threads). Get more wear out of your closet by bringing a few rarely-worn items to a more prominent position. If you don't wear items you should get rid of them, making space for clothing you will wear. Then, hang up or place the rest of your clothes on shelves. Put like clothes together(sweaters with sweaters, dresses with dresses, jeans with jeans, etc.) Now, organize your shoes neatly. You should always keep shoes with clothes so in the morning, you can dress from the head to the shoes.
Action Plan:
Put things that are relevant to current moment.
I will spend each week to de-clutter my workspace, wardrobe, shoes, bags, bookshelves and art & craft sections.
1st week - workspace
2nd week - bookshelves
3rd week - bookshelves
4th week - wardrobe, shoes and bags
5th week - art & craft

Inspiration from a Bhikkhuni
What truly inspires me is she said, "There is no one, she dislikes nor anyone, she can't trust." I think she is amazing and noble. Thanks for telling me that we can have this peace of mind and treat everyone equanimously.

Broken Friendship
This frame has been with me since Oct 2013! Due to my negligence when I woke up in one of the morning. The top part of letter "F" came off. I have scolded myself for being careless but the frame has already broken. It is more important question for me to do: What am I going to do about it?!
For the past few months, I just use a transparent scotch tape wrap it up. I know it looks ugly but I didn't bother to do anything about it. Until today, I decided to fix the broken part properly. I removed the ugly scotch tape and use uhu glue to glue it back carefully. Yes, it looks much better as though it has not been broken. But of course, there is still a missing chip that came off and the cracks between the broken part and the full frame. I still choose to put the frame beside my bedside so that I can continue to see my friends when I wake up! :)
This small incident has taught me an important lesson about friendship, or any other relationship. If I choose to focus on the crack (hurt), I will always be hurt. However, I choose to fix the crack (heal or do something about it), I actually healing the friendship and at least it won't get any worsen but getting better each time.
Although there is a crack in between, but at least I choose to do something about it, no more ugly scotch and from far, you can't tell there is a crack. Even I know there is a crack, I know that I have done my best to salvage this crack and make the best out of it.

Proud to be a Chinese
Since primary school, my Chinese result is always the top 10% in class. I enjoy Chinese classes, thanks to a chinese teacher, Chen Feng Ying, who taught me chinese at P2. Her Chinese class is interesting and I never feel bored in class. Since young, I learnt about a chinese phrase from her,"近朱者赤, 近墨者黑。"
朱砂 is also known as Cinnabar is a bright red mineral consisting of mercury sulfide. It means that when you touch the Cinnabar, your hand will turn red, if you touch the ink, your hand will turn black. Meaning that if you have good company, you will have good character. Like wise, if you hang out with bad company, your character will be tinted.
This teacher always tells us don't follow the bad students, learn from the good students. Hence, she splits us into 3 groups, The good students, mediocre students and poor students. My dear friend, Siew, her chinese isn't that fantastic. However, I still hang out with her. I become to influence her to like chinese as well. Over these years, her chinese has improved. Not only that, some of my friends who are weak in Chinese, through my explanation in some Chinese phrases, their chinese also improves.
Last time, I didn't find myself can benefit anyone through my knowledge in Chinese. Now, I truly appreciate that I learn Chinese well and I can educate my fellow mates and my students. Sometimes, I even help my clients to translate their work! Yes, I am proud to be a Chinese.

Art Therapy Day 3
Magnificent Sunset
This evening, I went jogging with a friend and we saw the beautiful sunset, it was mixture of blue, white and golden yellow. The sun's warmth is so gentle. It is an inspiration for today.
There is a chinese saying,
The setting Sun is endlessly endearing; But the light of day is disappearing! It means that every moment, will come to an end eventually. Cherish the present moment!
Art Therapy Day 2
Hope
Rainbow always gives me a sense of hope. Wanted to paint rainbow in a fluid manner, ends up the first one is too stiff and the colors are too strong. The second one is lighter and have the feel of rainbow but not in the shape of an rainbow. I guess I will need to balance the 2 visuals together to form the real rainbow in my heart. Anyway, it is a good experimental exercise for me to have a feel of the brush strokes, colors and the theme.
Although all seems out of place, but I learned something in this art therapy which is colors that are too strong are not pleasant in a long run. Yes, it does attract attention but it doesn't sustain at all. However, lighter tone tends to have the endurance and the soothing effects, even you can look at it for a very long time, with ease and pleasure.
It is also telling me that fast and furious is not lasting, however slow and gentle, going with the flow is the way to lasting happiness.

Art Therapy Day 1
Flowers in the water
Subtle raining in the pond where we can't differentiate the water from the sky and the water from the pond. Had some financial issues waiting for me to settle. Subtle discomfort but there is still hope. Hopefully, things will get better tomorrow.

My reflection about Life and Ch'an
It is the alignment of our body, speech and mind, all in one. One of the Venerables mentioned that we are all disintegrated, such that when we are thinking about object A, our heart is thinking about object B and our mouth is speaking on object C. Hence, it is totally disintegrated and it affects us in the long run, clarity is lost. By living in the present moment, having the right mindfulness, we are very clear with what we do. Hence, we are focus and clarity is gained. All these come with daily practise and it helps to balance our body, speech and mind.
I like Venerable Master Hsing Yun's 5 Harmony. He encouraged everyone to maintain harmony within self, their homes, respect others, create harmony within society and to propagate world peace. I personally think that it is achievable and it always starts from ourselves. Dr. Ang also shared, "Life is like a series of exams as our wisdom increases, we will be able to overcome these life challenges." I totally agreed with her and through learning the Dharma, I benefited a lot, it is easier for me to overcome my own challenges, not only that I am able to make peace with myself and spreading happiness to the people around me.
I love the daily morning meditation class. It is simple and easy to follow, just need to focus on the breathing and free our mind.
Overall, there are many great learning points but I will choose these 3 as main key points
1) Breathing is a form of cultivation and it is a way of being
2) Clearly understood and focus on what we do
3) Cherish all conditions around us, be it people, space and time
Although there are small hipcups in this retreat but they are negligible. We are all imperfect, how can we expect everything to be perfect? It is simply amazing when I see all FGS Venerables and organisers put all their hearts into the event, everyone of us played a part in making the event a success, that is the moment where I felt we are one. what more can I say but to fill my heart with gratitude.
